Karatsu Kunchi Festival
The Karatsu Kunchi Festival (唐津くんち) in Karatsu is a spectacular autumn celebration with a history dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867). Held annually from November 2 to 4, this three-day festival features an impressive parade of massive floats, known as hikiyama, which are pulled through the city. The highlight is the grand procession from Karatsu Shrine to Nishino Beach, where floats depicting mythical creatures like a killer whale and Urashima Taro—a fisherman from Japanese folklore—captivate visitors.
This vibrant festival coincides with the Saga International Balloon Fiesta, offering even more excitement. When the festival is not taking place, the elaborate hikiyama floats are displayed year-round at the Karatsu Hikiyama Exhibition Hall, located conveniently next to Karatsu Station. It's a must-see event that blends culture, history, and community spirit.
