Baien is located in the southern part of Yufuin. The town is best explored by bicycle or car, and several rental shops can be found near Yufuin Station, close to the tourist information center.

Baien
Baien (梅園, or Baien Garden) is a tranquil onsen hideaway located just south of Yufuin’s charming town center in Oita Prefecture. Nestled on a gentle slope, the ryokan’s hot spring facilities offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, including the iconic twin peaks of Mount Yufu (由布岳), visible from the outdoor baths on clear days. The onsen features spacious, gender-separated rotemburo (open-air baths) framed by trees and rustic wooden fences, blending harmoniously with the natural landscape. This peaceful setting, removed from the bustle of the main town, makes Baien an ideal escape for travelers seeking both relaxation and a deeper connection to Yufuin’s scenic charm.
The mildly alkaline hot spring water is renowned for its skin-smoothing properties, adding a gentle rejuvenating effect to the experience. Visitors can enjoy the soothing warmth of the baths throughout the year—mist often rises from the water in the early morning, while sunsets paint the valley in soft, golden hues. The layout of the baths encourages unhurried soaking, and the wide-open views create a meditative atmosphere that enhances the overall sense of serenity. Whether visiting on a day trip or staying overnight at the ryokan, Baien offers an immersive experience in one of Kyushu’s most picturesque hot spring regions.
