Kehi Shrine Festival
The Kehi Shrine Festival (気比神宮祭り, also known as the Tsuruga Festival), held every September in Tsuruga, marks the arrival of autumn in the city. This vibrant celebration features six grand, decorated floats, each crowned with life-sized historical figures. The city comes alive as residents participate in parades, carrying mikoshi portable shrines and the majestic dashi floats through the streets. Traditional music and folk dances fill the air, offering visitors a truly festive atmosphere.
In addition to the main festival, the Kehi Shrine also hosts a series of related events, including the Yoimiya Festival, Shinko Festival, and the Tsukinami Festival, which takes place in mid-September. Lasting nearly two weeks, this lively period of celebrations draws crowds for its folk songs, dancing, and elaborate carnival parade. The Tsuruga Festival is not only an excellent showcase of Tsuruga’s culture but also an event that immerses visitors in local traditions.
