From Tokyo take the Yamabiko on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama, then transfer to the JR Banetsu-sai Line for Aizu-Wakamatsu. The trip takes about 3 hours, costs around ¥9,500, and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

From Tokyo take a daytime or overnight bus from Busta Shinjuku to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. The ride takes about 4.5 hours (around 7 hours at night) and costs about ¥5,000. A small number of cheaper tickets are available if you buy at least one day early.
From Nikko to Aizu Wakamatsu

From Nikko take the rural train route operated by Tobu, Yagan, and Aizu Railway to reach Aizu-Wakamatsu. With smooth transfers, the trip takes about 3 hours, costs around ¥5,000, and usually involves 2–3 transfers at stations like Shimo-Imaichi, Kinugawa Onsen, or Aizu-Tajima. This route is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
