Okinawa Prefecture
Okinawa (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken) is Japan’s southernmost prefecture, consisting of dozens of small islands stretching from Kyushu to Taiwan. Known for its warm climate, turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life, it’s a top destination for snorkeling, diving, and relaxing on tropical beaches. The islands are grouped into three main areas: the Okinawa Islands around the main island, the Miyako Islands, and the Yaeyama Islands — home to popular Ishigaki Island.
The region was once the center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which had its own distinct culture, language, and traditions—still alive today in Okinawan cuisine, music, and crafts. Okinawa’s complex history includes periods as a Chinese tributary, Japanese domain, and a World War II battleground. Despite these past hardships, Okinawa now thrives as a vibrant and welcoming destination where nature and culture come together in a truly unique way.
