Kagoshima Aquarium
The Kagoshima Aquarium (いおワールドかごしま水族館, Io World Kagoshima Suizokukan) is a popular destination for marine life enthusiasts and families with children. Located on the scenic waterfront next to the ferry terminal to Sakurajima, this modern aquarium spans seven floors. It highlights the rich marine biodiversity of the waters surrounding Kagoshima and its nearby islands, including the Amami Islands and the Osumi Peninsula. The undisputed highlight is the impressive Kuroshio Tank—a massive, crystal-clear reservoir where visitors come face-to-face with schools of fish, graceful stingrays, and even a giant shark—a rare and fascinating sight.
In addition to the main tank, the aquarium features a wide range of themed exhibits. Guests can admire playful sea otters, giant Japanese crabs, vibrant coral reefs, mysterious electric eels, and unique mangrove ecosystems. One of the most popular attractions is the dolphin pool, where daily shows captivate audiences of all ages. On special occasions, the dolphins are even released into the canal in front of the building, where they swim and play freely—offering a rare opportunity to observe their intelligence and playfulness in a more natural environment.
