From Kyoto, take a local or rapid train on the JR Sagano Line to Hiyoshi Station (about 45 minutes, transfer at Sonobe, 770 yen, JR Pass covered), then a Nantan Bus to Miyama (50 minutes, 600 yen, hourly service to Kita).
From Takao to Miyama

From Takeo, take a JR bus toward Shuzan, the last stop. The ride takes about 90 minutes and costs 1080 yen (covered by the Japan Rail Pass), but not all buses go that far. From Shuzan, transfer to a Nantan Bus to Miyama, which takes 30 minutes and costs 600 yen. These buses are very limited, so check the schedule in advance.
