Kosanji Temple

3 of 7 in Onomichi

Kosanji Temple (耕三寺, Kōsanji), located on Ikuchijima Island, is a stunning example of Japanese devotion and architecture. Founded in 1936 by a businessman inspired by his love for his mother, the temple took over 30 years to complete. Visitors will be amazed by its replicas of famous Japanese landmarks, including the Yomeimon Gate from Nikko Toshogu and the Phoenix Hall from Byodoin Temple. The temple’s vibrant buildings are visually striking while maintaining a harmonious design.

A fascinating feature of Kosanji is its long underground cave, which vividly depicts the torments of Buddhist hell. For art enthusiasts, the Miraishin no Oka—a hilltop area made entirely of Italian marble—features abstract sculptures and offers breathtaking views. The temple also houses numerous works of Buddhist and modern art. Visitors can complete their experience with a meal at Café Cuore, an Italian restaurant located on the hill.
