Shodoshima Soy Sauce

4 of 8 in Shodoshima Island

Shodoshima Soy Sauce has been an integral part of the island’s culinary heritage for over 400 years, with a long tradition of craftsmanship that continues to this day. The area between Kusakabe Port and Sakate Port is home to about a dozen soy sauce factories, where visitors can witness the time-honored methods of brewing this savory condiment. Among these, Marukin stands out as a must-visit, offering a soy sauce museum that delves into the history and production process. The museum showcases original brewing tools, detailed English-language displays, and a gift shop where you can taste and purchase a variety of soy sauces crafted using traditional methods.

In addition to soy sauce, Shodoshima is also known for its local specialty, tsukudani—small pieces of seafood, meat, or vegetables simmered in a rich, sweet soy sauce. Visitors can discover the flavors of this unique dish by visiting two specialty shops in the area. Kyohotei Tsukudani offers mini walking tours along with a small museum where you can learn more about this local delicacy. Just around the corner, Ittokuan Tsukudani allows guests to sample and purchase an assortment of tsukudani in various flavors, providing a delicious experience for those keen on exploring Shodoshima’s rich culinary culture.
