Omizo Castle Ruins and Otomega Pond
Omizo Castle Ruins (大溝城) and Otomega Pond (乙女ヶ池), located just southeast of Omi-Takashima Station, provide a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s rich history. The castle, built during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568–1600 C.E.) by Oda Nobuzumi, sits atop a forested hill, surrounded by ancient stone walls. Nobuzumi, known for fortifying Shinjō Castle, established a thriving castle town in the area. He strategically relocated merchant houses and shrines to this site, creating a vibrant community around the castle. Today, the remnants of the castle’s tower keep and stone walls stand as a testament to the area's historical significance.
Just a short distance from the ruins lies Otomega Pond, which once served as the castle’s outer moat and now forms a picturesque inlet of Lake Biwa. The tranquil pond is a popular photography spot, with its serene waters reflecting the surrounding natural beauty. Visitors can also capture the iconic humpback bridge, which adds a charming element to the scene. Otomega Pond’s scenic beauty, combined with its historical connection to the castle, makes it a perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat steeped in history and nature.
