Nijushi no Hitomi Movie Village

8 of 8 in Shodoshima Island

Nijushi no Hitomi Movie Village (二十四の瞳映画村) offers a step back in time, immersing visitors in the nostalgic world of the 1954 film Twenty-Four Eyes. This emotional film tells the story of a school teacher and her students during the rise of Japanese nationalism before World War II and has left a lasting impact on the island. After a color remake in 1987, the film's original set was transformed into a public village, bringing early 20th-century Japan to life. Visitors can wander through a recreated community complete with a traditional schoolhouse, quaint homes, a shrine, and expansive fields, all of which capture the essence of Japan's past.

Beyond the historic buildings, Nijushi no Hitomi Movie Village offers a range of charming experiences. Guests can enjoy a meal at a restaurant serving nostalgic school lunches, reminiscent of the ones seen in the film. The village also features an antique movie theater, where visitors can watch the original Twenty-Four Eyes film. For those interested in the history of Japanese cinema, there are small museums dedicated to the film's writer and the broader legacy of Japanese film. Just a short walk away is the original schoolhouse from the movie, once an actual elementary school, which continues to stand as a poignant symbol of the film’s historical significance.
