Naruto Travel Tips

1 of 2 in Tokushima Prefecture

Naruto (鳴門), located at the northeastern tip of Shikoku Island in Tokushima Prefecture, is renowned for its extraordinary natural phenomenon—the famous Naruto whirlpools. These swirling tidal currents, some of the largest in the world, occur beneath the iconic Onaruto Bridge that links Shikoku to Awaji Island. Visitors can witness the powerful whirlpools from several viewing platforms strategically placed along the bridge, or choose to experience them up close on specialized boat tours that navigate the dynamic waters. The spectacle offers a thrilling insight into the raw force of nature and is a must-see attraction for travelers interested in natural wonders.

Beyond its natural allure, Naruto holds significant cultural importance as the gateway to the Shikoku Pilgrimage — an ancient spiritual journey connecting 88 temples dedicated to Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. The pilgrimage begins at Ryozenji Temple in Naruto, where visitors can immerse themselves in centuries of religious tradition and cultural heritage. This unique blend of breathtaking natural phenomena and profound spiritual history makes Naruto an enriching destination that appeals to both nature enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike.

Getting around

In Naruto, the main attractions are spread out and located outside the city center. Naruto Park and the famous whirlpools lie about 6 km north of downtown, while Ryozenji Temple and the German-related sites are approximately 10 km to the west. If you arrive by train, you’ll disembark at JR Naruto Station, from where it’s a 20-minute bus ride to Naruto Park and the whirlpools.

If you arrive by highway bus, note that buses do not stop in the city center. Most stop at Naruto Kosoku Bus Stop, where you can transfer to a local bus at Konarutobashi Bus Stop to reach either Naruto Station or Naruto Park. Some buses from Osaka or Kyoto also stop at Naruto Koen-guchi Bus Stop near Naruto Park, but only in one direction. If you’re flying in, Tokushima Airport is about 15 minutes south of Naruto Station by bus, and most airport buses continue on to Naruto Park. While public transport is available, it’s infrequent—renting a car from Tokushima City or the airport is often the easiest way to get around.
