Kankakei Gorge

2 of 8 in Shodoshima Island

Kankakei Gorge (寒霞渓) is a breathtaking ravine located in the heart of Shodoshima Island, recognized as one of the three most beautiful gorges in Japan. The gorge is especially popular in autumn when the foliage transforms into a vibrant display of red, gold, and orange, typically reaching its peak in the second half of November. Visitors can enjoy stunning vistas from the Kankakei Ropeway, which operates between two stations, offering a scenic and relaxing ride. The upper station, situated near the island’s highest peak, provides panoramic observation decks where guests can enjoy expansive views of the gorge, the surrounding island, and the vast Seto Inland Sea.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, two hiking trails connect the ropeway stations, offering a chance to explore the natural beauty of the area up close. The western trail, about two kilometers long, takes roughly an hour to ascend and offers a gentle uphill climb through the forest. The eastern trail, slightly longer at three kilometers, provides a more extended journey through lush greenery. Both trails offer a tranquil and scenic escape, allowing visitors to connect with the gorge’s serene landscape. There is convenient access to the area by car, with parking available at both ropeway stations, making it easy for visitors to explore this stunning natural wonder.
