Chokeiji Temple
Chokeiji Temple (長慶寺, Chōkeiji) is a serene hilltop retreat located next to the Toyama Municipal Folk Craft Village, offering visitors a peaceful escape steeped in history and spiritual charm. Founded in 1786, the temple is best known for its remarkable collection of 500 rakan—statues representing the disciples of Buddha. Each figure is uniquely carved, with distinct facial expressions, gestures, and postures that reflect a wide range of human emotions and personalities. Arranged along a forested slope beside the main hall, these statues create a powerful, contemplative atmosphere that invites quiet reflection.
The temple grounds are surrounded by trees and natural beauty, offering scenic views over Toyama City and a calming contrast to the urban landscape below. Many visitors find themselves drawn to a particular statue that resonates personally, making the experience feel intimate and memorable. In every season, the temple’s tranquil setting enhances its spiritual presence—whether beneath springtime cherry blossoms or amid the vibrant colors of autumn. For those exploring the nearby folk village, Chokeiji Temple is a rewarding stop that fosters a deeper connection to the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.
