Toyama Castle Park
Toyama Castle Park (富山城址公園, Toyama Jōshi Kōen) is a tranquil green space in the heart of Toyama City, located on the historic site of the original Toyama Castle, first constructed in 1543. Although the original structure was lost, a modern reconstruction of the castle keep was completed in 1954 and now houses the Toyama Municipal Folk Museum. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits that detail the city’s feudal history and samurai heritage. The top floor features a small observation deck with scenic views of the surrounding park. Several original elements from the Edo period, such as stone walls and sections of the moat, still remain, preserving a tangible connection to the past.
The park offers a harmonious blend of history and nature, with open lawns, a beautifully maintained Japanese garden, and cherry trees that bloom spectacularly each April. A statue of Maeda Toshinaga, the local feudal lord, stands proudly on the grounds, adding a sense of historical reverence to the setting. Adjacent to the park, the Sato Memorial Art Museum displays a rich collection of traditional art and artifacts, including tea ceremony rooms, lacquerware, and paintings donated by Toyama-born industrialist Sato Sukekuro. Whether you're drawn by cultural heritage or simply seeking a peaceful place to relax, the park is a welcoming retreat in the city center.
