Yonaguni Island has one main road that connects Yonaguni Airport, the island’s three villages, and most major attractions. A few smaller roads also cross the island, making it easy to explore by vehicle or bike.
A free community bus runs every two hours along the western side of the island, linking the villages. Rental options are also available, including cars, mopeds, and bicycles. Rental cars cost around 5,000 yen per day, while mopeds are approximately 3,000 yen. Bicycles—including electric models—can be rented for 2,000 to 3,500 yen for a 24-hour period. Cycling around the island typically takes 3 to 4 hours. Advance reservations for rentals are recommended.

Yonaguni Island Travel Tips
Yonaguni Island (与那国島, Yonaguni-jima), Japan’s westernmost point, is a remote treasure in the Yaeyama archipelago of Okinawa Prefecture. Surrounded by approximately 30 kilometers of rugged coastline, this isolated island is home to fewer than 2,000 residents and offers a peaceful escape from modern life. Its lush subtropical scenery, free-roaming Yonaguni horses, and rare wildlife such as the striking Atlas moth create a haven for nature enthusiasts. The surrounding waters, renowned for their clarity and biodiversity, make Yonaguni a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving, featuring vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life.
Among the island’s most thrilling attractions is the seasonal migration of hammerhead sharks, drawing divers from around the world between late November and May for a chance to swim alongside these magnificent creatures. Yet Yonaguni’s most iconic mystery lies beneath the waves—the Yonaguni Monument. These massive underwater rock formations, shaped like terraces, steps, and platforms, have ignited debate: are they the work of nature, or evidence of a lost civilization? Whether you seek underwater adventure or are intrigued by ancient enigmas, Yonaguni Island promises a truly unforgettable experience at the far edge of Japan.
