Atlas Moth Museum
The Atlas Moth Museum (アヤミハビル館), also known as the Ayami Habil Hall, is a small but captivating facility on the eastern side of Yonaguni Island dedicated to the world’s largest moth. Locally called Ayamibabiru, the Atlas moth is a striking species with massive, patterned wings that can span up to 25 centimeters. The museum offers visitors a rare opportunity to observe these gentle giants up close, often in a recreated environment that mimics their natural habitat.
Inside, the museum features exhibits that cover the full lifecycle of the moth—from caterpillar to cocoon to adult—as well as its ecological role and cultural importance on the island. Informative panels, photographs, and preserved specimens provide rich context, making the experience both educational and engaging for all ages. A visit here is ideal for families, insect enthusiasts, or anyone curious about Yonaguni’s unique biodiversity. Seeing the sheer size and beauty of the Atlas moth in person is a truly unforgettable island highlight.
