Gunkan and Tategami Rocks are located on the western side of Yonaguni Island, near the island’s western cape. There’s no nearby bus stop, so the best way to reach them is by rental car, moped, or bicycle.

Gunkan and Tategami rocks
Gunkan-iwa (軍艦岩) and Tategami-iwa (立神岩) are two of the most iconic natural landmarks along the dramatic western coastline of Yonaguni Island. Gunkan-iwa, meaning “warship rock,” gets its name from its solid, imposing shape that resembles a battleship rising from the sea. Nearby stands Tategami-iwa, a slender, pillar-like formation often compared to a candle—especially when bathed in shifting sunlight throughout the day. Together, these coastal rock formations create a striking contrast against the sea and sky, offering unforgettable photo opportunities and a deep connection to Yonaguni’s wild, unspoiled landscape.
The area around Yonaguni’s western cape is renowned for its rugged beauty—jagged cliffs, dramatic ocean views, and unique geological shapes sculpted by centuries of wind and waves. Several scenic lookout points are easily accessible by road, each offering a different perspective on this breathtaking coastline. Whether you're exploring by car, bicycle, or as part of a guided tour, the western coast delivers a memorable experience for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone drawn to the raw, untamed spirit of Japan’s westernmost island.
