Getting around Ishigaki Island is fairly easy, especially since the new Ishigaki Airport opened in 2013, about 10 kilometers from the city center. The easiest and most flexible way to explore the island is by renting a car. Many well-known Japanese rental companies have branches on the island. Most popular spots can be reached within 30 to 45 minutes from Ishigaki City, though the far north takes a bit longer—about 35 kilometers away.
Buses are available too, with frequent service between the airport and downtown. There are express buses that go straight to the ferry terminal (about 30 minutes, 500 yen), and others that stop at several places along the way (around 35-40 minutes, 540 yen). However, buses to tourist spots like Kabira Bay or Yonehara Beach run less often. You can buy a 1-day bus pass for 1000 yen or a 5-day pass for 2000 yen. Taxis are also an option, with a ride from the airport to the city center costing about 3000 yen and taking around 30 minutes.
