Iriomote Island (西表島) is a hidden gem in Okinawa, boasting lush jungles and mangrove forests that cover nearly 90% of its landscape. As the second-largest island in the region, Iriomote is part of the stunning Iriomote Ishigaki National Park, Japan’s southernmost national park. This untouched paradise invites adventure seekers to explore its diverse ecosystems and breathtaking scenery.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of activities, including sea and river kayaking, fishing, and sailing, all while soaking in the island's natural beauty. With pristine beaches and excellent snorkeling spots, there's something for everyone. For the more adventurous, a challenging 20-kilometer hiking trail winds through the heart of the island, perfect for experienced hikers looking for an unforgettable journey.

Getting around

Iriomote Island has just one main road that stretches along the coast from Shirahama to Ohara. A public bus runs between these two towns four times a day, taking about 90 minutes for the full trip, costing 1410 yen. You can also get a one-day bus pass for 1500 yen.

In addition to the public buses, shuttle buses are available from ferry companies and various tour operators. You can also rent a car from several rental offices near the ferry terminals. For those who prefer cycling, bicycle rentals are available for around 1000 yen per day.
