Kawagoe Travel Tips

2 of 3 in Saitama Prefecture

Kawagoe (川越) is a charming city just 30 minutes from central Tokyo, known for its beautifully preserved Kurazukuri buildings—clay-walled warehouses that recreate the feel of a traditional Edo Period town. Strolling through its main street feels like stepping back in time, which is why it earned the nickname "Little Edo." This nostalgic setting draws visitors looking to experience Japan's rich past in a single day trip.

The city thrived during the Edo Period as a key supplier to Edo (now Tokyo), with strong ties to the shogunate. Kawagoe Castle was governed by trusted lords appointed by the shogun himself. You can also visit Kitain Temple, one of the region’s most significant temples, which houses the last surviving buildings of the original Edo Castle—offering a rare, direct link to Tokyo's ancient legacy.

Getting around

In Kawagoe, there are three train stations. Hon-Kawagoe Station is the closest to the main sights, while Kawagoe Station and Kawagoe-shi Station are a bit farther. You can walk or rent a bike to explore the city. The Kawagoe Warehouse District is about 10–15 minutes on foot from Hon-Kawagoe Station. Kitain Temple and Honmaru Goten are also nearby, just 10 minutes away from the Kawagoe Warehouse District and from each other.

You can also get around Kawagoe by bus. Two tourist loop buses connect the main spots. The Tobu Koedo Loop Bus runs every hour on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends. A day pass costs 400 yen. Another option is the Co-Edo Loop Bus, a vintage-style bus with routes running once or twice an hour. It costs 200 yen for one ride or 500 yen for a full-day pass.
