Kawagoe Travel Tips

2 of 3 in Saitama Prefecture

Kawagoe (川越) is a picturesque city located just 30 minutes from central Tokyo, renowned for its well-preserved Kurazukuri buildings—traditional clay-walled warehouses that evoke the atmosphere of the Edo Period. Walking along the main street, lined with these historic structures, feels like stepping into a bygone era, earning the city its nickname "Little Edo." The nostalgic townscape, along with its quaint shops, sweet potato-themed treats, and local crafts, makes Kawagoe a popular destination for those seeking a day trip filled with history and charm.

Historically, Kawagoe played a vital role during the Edo Period as a commercial hub that supported the capital, Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The city was governed by feudal lords closely connected to the Tokugawa shogunate, reinforcing its political and economic importance. A visit to Kawagoe Castle’s Honmaru Goten — one of the few remaining castle buildings in the region — offers insight into this legacy. Nearby Kitain Temple is another must-see, famous for housing the only surviving structures of Edo Castle, which were relocated to Kawagoe after a fire. This unique connection provides visitors with a tangible link to the heart of Japan’s feudal past.

Getting around

Kawagoe has three train stations. Hon-Kawagoe Station is the closest to the main attractions, while Kawagoe Station and Kawagoe-shi Station are a bit farther away. The city is easy to explore on foot or by renting a bicycle. The Kawagoe Warehouse District is about a 10–15-minute walk from Hon-Kawagoe Station. Other key sights like Kitain Temple and Honmaru Goten are also nearby, just 10 minutes from the Warehouse District and close to each other.

You can also get around Kawagoe by bus. Two tourist loop buses connect the city’s main highlights. The Tobu Koedo Loop Bus operates every hour on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends, with a day pass available for 400 yen. Another option is the Co-Edo Loop Bus, a vintage-style vehicle that runs once or twice an hour. A single ride costs 200 yen, or you can get a full-day pass for 500 yen.
