Kawagoe Festival

1 of 1 in Kawagoe

The Kawagoe Festival (川越まつり, Kawagoe Matsuri) is one of the most thrilling autumn events in Saitama Prefecture, deeply rooted in the annual "Reitaisai" ritual at Hikawa Shrine, and celebrated every October. The festival is famous for its enormous, two-story Edo-style floats, known as dashi, which are a striking blend of centuries-old craftsmanship and vibrant parades. As these grand floats are paraded through the streets, they engage in energetic battles of traditional hayashi music, with competing groups performing in an exciting display of sound and rhythm. A highlight of the festival is the spectacle of these floats, complete with puppets and intricate trapdoor-style mechanisms, navigating the narrow streets — a design originally created to allow the floats to pass through castle gates.

However, the Kawagoe Festival is not just about the spectacle; it is a celebration that bridges the past and present. Originally established as a unifying event during the Edo period, it gave communities a sense of connection and collective strength through shared cultural traditions. Today, the festival continues to be a symbol of local pride, passed down through generations. Walking through the streets as the colorful curtains (kōhaku-maku) rise and the excitement builds is a deeply moving experience — one that honors the rich history of Kawagoe while celebrating the enduring spirit of community.
