Matsumae is small, and you can easily walk to all the main attractions.

Matsumae Travel Tips
Matsumae (松前) sits on Hokkaido’s southern edge, once Japan’s northern frontier during the Edo Period. It was the only feudal domain on the island, protected by Matsumae Castle — the only traditional Japanese castle ever built in Hokkaido. Though the original structure no longer stands, a faithful 1960s reconstruction now houses a museum with samurai relics and Ainu-related artifacts.
Surrounding the castle is Matsumae Park, famous for its breathtaking cherry blossoms. With over 10,000 trees and more than 250 varieties, it enjoys one of Japan’s longest sakura seasons, lasting from late April to May. The park features a Sakura Museum, a viewpoint at Mount Shogun, and historic temples like Ryuunin. You can also explore Matsumaehan Yashiki, a recreated Edo-era town with interactive exhibits and costume rentals.
