Matsumae Travel Tips

9 of 16 in Hokkaido Prefecture

Matsumae (松前), located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, once marked the northernmost frontier of Japan during the Edo Period. It was home to the Matsumae Domain—the only feudal territory on the island—and served as a strategic gateway to the north. At its center stood Matsumae Castle, the only Japanese-style castle ever built in Hokkaido. Although the original structure was lost, a faithful 1960s reconstruction now houses a museum featuring samurai armor, weaponry, and artifacts related to the indigenous Ainu people—offering insight into the region’s cultural and historical dynamics.

Surrounding the castle is Matsumae Park, one of Hokkaido’s most cherished cherry blossom spots. With over 10,000 trees and more than 250 sakura varieties, it boasts one of Japan’s longest blooming seasons, from late April through May. Highlights include the Sakura Museum, the Mount Shogun viewpoint, and historic temples like Ryuunin and Kozenji. Just a short walk away, Matsumaehan Yashiki — an Edo-period town recreation — invites visitors to explore merchant houses, enjoy interactive exhibits, and even dress in period costumes. Matsumae offers a rare blend of samurai heritage, seasonal beauty, and immersive cultural experiences.
