Yokozuna Museum

5 of 6 in Matsumae

Yokozuna Museum (横綱博物館, Yokozuna Hakubutsukan) honors the legacy of two legendary sumo wrestlers: Chiyonoyama and Chiyonofuji. Chiyonoyama made a name for himself in postwar Japan with his strength and rapid rise to yokozuna—the highest rank in sumo. He later mentored Chiyonofuji, who became one of the most celebrated wrestlers in the sport's modern era.

Despite being lighter than most of his rivals, Chiyonofuji amazed fans with his power, technique, and record-breaking wins. The museum showcases their achievements, with memorabilia, photos, and exhibits that offer insight into the world of professional sumo. It's a fascinating stop for anyone interested in Japanese sports, culture, and local pride.
