Iwayaji Temple
Iwayaji Temple (岩屋寺), the 45th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, is nestled deep within the mountains of Ehime Prefecture, offering both a spiritual and physical challenge for pilgrims. Perched more than 600 meters above the Kuma Highland, the journey to the temple is both invigorating and rewarding. The steep hiking trails wind through towering trees, moss-covered rocks, and rugged cliffs, creating a serene yet awe-inspiring atmosphere. In winter, the temple’s surroundings are transformed by a blanket of snow, adding a magical tranquility to the experience, especially for those who make the early morning trek. Along the way, small shops provide a chance to rest and refuel before continuing to the temple gates.
Upon reaching the temple, visitors are greeted by impressive wooden gates and a striking red bridge that leads to an array of stone Buddhist statues. One of the most notable features is the collection of 36 young acolytes of Acala, positioned above a sacred well, creating a powerful spiritual presence. The priest’s quarters, dramatically built into the side of a towering cliff, exemplify the remarkable architecture of the temple, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The temple’s beauty and tranquil atmosphere invite visitors to pause, reflect, and take in the breathtaking views, making it a truly memorable stop on the pilgrimage.
