Choanji Temple
Choanji Temple (長安寺, Chōanji) is a hidden gem of Zen Buddhism, quietly nestled in the tranquil Sengokuhara area of Hakone since its founding in 1356. Established as a Rinzai Zen temple, it offers a peaceful retreat from Hakone’s busier tourist spots, surrounded by forested hills and the stillness of nature. Visitors can stroll along serene walking paths that wind through a wooded landscape dotted with moss-covered stones, ancient graves, and towering cedar trees—creating an atmosphere of deep reflection and timeless beauty.
What truly sets Choanji apart is its captivating collection of over 200 rakan statues—stone depictions of the enlightened disciples of Buddha. Each statue is carved with a unique, often whimsical expression, ranging from meditative to joyful or even mischievous, giving the temple a deeply human and artistic character. In autumn, Choanji becomes especially breathtaking as its grounds burst into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, typically peaking around mid-November. With its blend of cultural depth, natural beauty, and spiritual serenity, Choanji Temple is a rewarding destination for both contemplative visitors and photography enthusiasts.
