Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Field

20 of 33 in Hakone

Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Field (仙石原すすき草原) is one of Hakone’s most iconic natural landscapes, situated on the western slope of Mount Hakone in the scenic Sengokuhara district. This vast expanse, blanketed with tall pampas grass (susuki in Japanese), stretches across gently rolling hills for several hundred meters. In autumn, the grass turns a soft golden-silver hue, swaying in the breeze and creating a mesmerizing, photogenic scene that draws visitors from all over Japan.

A well-maintained walking trail winds through the field, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the landscape and reach elevated viewpoints with sweeping views of the valley and surrounding mountains. While most popular in October and November, when the pampas grass is at its peak, the field offers seasonal beauty throughout the year. In spring, it's rejuvenated through yakihara—a traditional controlled burning technique that encourages healthy regrowth. Summer brings vibrant green hills, and early autumn begins the gradual shift to the iconic golden glow. Whether you're after striking photos, a peaceful walk, or a connection with nature, Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Field delivers a memorable experience in the heart of Hakone.
