Utsunomiya Travel Tips

3 of 5 in Tochigi Prefecture

Utsunomiya (宇都宮), the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, is a dynamic city located just an hour north of Tokyo by shinkansen. The city has a deep historical connection to the mining industry, particularly through the use of Oya stone, a distinctive and beautiful building material that has shaped Utsunomiya’s architectural landscape. Oya stone, quarried from the nearby Oya district, has been used in the construction of various structures, including temples and historical buildings. Additionally, Utsunomiya serves as a convenient gateway for those heading to Nikko, home to stunning shrines and temples, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the region.

Utsunomiya is also widely recognized for its mouthwatering gyoza, a type of Japanese dumpling that has become a beloved local specialty. The city boasts a vibrant food scene, with numerous restaurants serving gyoza in all styles—from pan-fried and deep-fried to boiled. Gyoza fillings vary widely, with popular options including pork, kimchi, and seafood, catering to all tastes. Utsunomiya is often in fierce competition for the title of Japan’s gyoza capital, consistently ranking high in national consumption rates. Getting around

In Utsunomiya, the main travel hub is JR Utsunomiya Station. It’s well-connected by buses, including those that go to the Oya History Museum and Oya Temple. There’s also a light rail line, but it’s not yet very useful for tourists, though it may become more helpful once extended toward Oya. You can also take a JR train from JR Utsunomiya Station to Nikko in about 45 minutes.

Another station in the city is Tobu-Utsunomiya Station, about 1.5 km west of the JR station. It’s the final stop on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line. Both JR and Tobu stations are served by many of the same bus lines, making it easy to get around, especially if you’re heading toward Oya.
