Oya History Museum

Recommended
1 of 1 in Utsunomiya

The Oya History Museum (大谷資料館, Ōya Shiryōkan) in Utsunomiya offers a truly unique experience, set in an underground space carved out of a former stone quarry. This expansive cavern was once the source of Oya Stone, a material that contributed to significant architectural works, such as the former Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Today, visitors can explore the museum’s vast underground halls, which stretch over 20,000 square meters. Inside, atmospheric lighting, art installations, and historical exhibits offer a fascinating look at the mining techniques and tools once used here. The cool, natural air conditioning of the caves adds to the surreal atmosphere, making it a remarkable space to visit.

In addition to its historical and cultural exhibitions, the Oya History Museum is a sought-after venue for various events. The museum’s unique underground setting is frequently used for concerts, weddings, and temporary exhibitions, with the chapel and stage—both carved directly from the rock—enhancing its charm. The expansive halls, bathed in colorful lighting, create a dramatic backdrop that heightens the experience for all visitors. Whether you're interested in the rich history, stunning architecture, or the dramatic setting, the Oya History Museum is a hidden gem near Utsunomiya that offers an unforgettable visit.
