Lee Ufan Museum

6 of 9 in Naoshima Island

The Lee Ufan Museum (李禹煥美術館, Ri Ūfan Bijutsukan) is an essential stop on Naoshima Island, where contemporary art and exceptional architecture come together in perfect harmony. Opened during the 2010 Setouchi Triennale, it is dedicated to the work of Lee Ufan, a celebrated Korean artist who has made Japan his artistic home. Its collection spans large-scale installations made from stone, concrete, and iron, reflecting Lee’s distinctive approach to blending natural materials with artistic expression. Visitors can also explore some of his earlier paintings, offering insight into his artistic journey and evolution. The museum’s tranquil, minimalist design creates an immersive space, inviting visitors to reflect deeply on the art displayed.

This seamless blend of art and architecture is embodied in the museum’s design by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Ando’s earlier works on Naoshima Island, including the Benesse House and Chichu Art Museum, laid the foundation for the Lee Ufan Museum, where geometrically shaped concrete integrates harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The design encourages a smooth interaction between modern art and nature, enhancing the visitor experience with a sense of serenity and openness. This fusion of art, architecture, and nature makes the museum a memorable destination for those passionate about contemporary art and architectural beauty.
