Chichu Art Museum

Recommended
1 of 9 in Naoshima Island

The Chichu Art Museum (地中美術館, Chichū Bijutsukan) is a stunning fusion of art and architecture, offering a unique cultural experience. Designed by renowned architect Ando Tadao, the museum is built underground, seamlessly integrating with the island’s natural landscape. The innovative use of natural light creates an ethereal atmosphere, illuminating masterpieces in a way that enhances their beauty. Visitors are immersed in the world of art as they explore iconic works like Monet’s Water Lilies, James Turrell’s mesmerizing light installations, and Walter De Maria’s thought-provoking Time/Timeless/No Time. Each gallery within the museum is carefully curated to create a sensory experience that deepens the connection between art and nature.

To preserve the serene environment of the museum, advance reservations are required, and the number of visitors is limited. To ensure a quiet and uninterrupted experience, bags and cameras are not permitted inside the museum and must be stored before entry. With careful planning and respect for the museum’s rules, visitors can fully immerse themselves in this harmonious blend of art, architecture, and nature, making it an unforgettable destination for those seeking a contemplative and visually striking experience.
