Buses run between Chuzenji Onsen and Hangetsuyama only in October and early November (20 minutes, 710 yen, every 2 hours). From the last stop, it takes about 30 minutes to hike to the summit. If you prefer not to hike, get off one stop earlier at Chuzenji Tenbodai, which is right next to the Chuzenjiko Observation Deck.
Mount Hangetsuyama (Hangetsusan)
Mount Hangetsuyama (半月山, also pronounced Hangetsusan), located at the southeastern edge of Lake Chuzenji, is a must-visit destination for those seeking stunning panoramic views of the Okunikko region. The mountain offers breathtaking vistas of Lake Chuzenji and the towering Mount Nantai, making it a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can enjoy scenic trails leading to the summit, with an observation deck near the top providing exceptional views, especially during the autumn months from mid-October to early November. During this time, the area is transformed as vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows fill the landscape, attracting many visitors for leaf-viewing.
For those who prefer a more leisurely approach, a winding road leads to a point three-quarters of the way up the mountain, accessible by bus, taxi, or rental car. From the parking lot, visitors can embark on a 30-minute hike along a steep trail to reach the summit. The Chuzenjiko Skyline road, once a toll road and now free to use, also passes an observation deck offering beautiful views of the lake. However, it’s important to note that the road is closed from late November to mid-April, so visitors should plan their visit accordingly to enjoy the best access.
