From Nikko, take a Tobu bus from JR or Tobu Nikko Station bound for Chuzenji Onsen or Yumoto Onsen. The ride takes about 40 minutes and follows the Irohazaka Winding Road. If driving, take Route 120, which includes the one-way uphill and downhill sections of Irohazaka. Expect traffic delays in autumn due to the popularity of this scenic route.
Irohazaka Winding Road
Irohazaka Winding Road is a spectacular mountain pass that connects Nikko to Lake Chuzenji, ascending more than 400 meters through a series of dramatic hairpin turns. The road’s name is derived from the old Japanese syllabary “iroha,” and it originally featured 48 curves, symbolizing the entire alphabet. Today, Irohazaka is a must-see attraction for travelers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. In particular, it becomes a striking visual spectacle during autumn when the landscape is painted in rich hues of red, orange, and gold.
From mid-October to early November, Irohazaka transforms into one of Nikko’s premier destinations for autumn foliage. Visitors flock to this scenic road to experience the vibrant fall colors while navigating its winding turns. The road provides a thrilling drive as it curves through a forest of maple and ginkgo trees, offering unparalleled views of the changing landscape. However, during the peak of the season, traffic congestion is common, so it’s important to plan ahead for delays.
