Owakudani
Owakudani (大涌谷), is a unique volcanic zone formed by the last eruption of Mount Hakone around 3,000 years ago. Visitors can experience an active volcanic landscape, with sulfurous fumes, hot springs, and bubbling pools. The area offers stunning views of Mount Fuji on clear days, making it a popular sightseeing spot. A short 30-minute walking trail takes you past steam vents and pools, with admission requiring a reservation. The famous black eggs, cooked in the hot spring waters, are said to extend one’s life by seven years.
For adventurous visitors, hiking trails lead from the ropeway station to the peaks of Mount Kamiyama and Mount Komagatake, offering dramatic views along the way. Although these trails are currently closed due to volcanic activity, an alternative trail leads to Lake Ashinoko, offering a scenic hike around the lake’s shore. This round-trip takes about 4.5 hours and is connected to the Hakone Ropeway, making it easy to explore the area.
