Hakodate Port Festival
The Hakodate Port Festival (函館港まつり), held annually from August 1 to 5, is the highlight of the summer season in Hakodate. The festival begins with an impressive fireworks display that lights up the sky, followed by a vibrant parade featuring Mikoshi (portable shrines) and elaborately decorated floats. One of the most popular events is the “Ika Odori” (Squid Dance), where both locals and visitors come together to enjoy this fun and simple dance, making it an interactive experience for everyone. The streets come alive with music, lively parades, and a variety of food stalls offering delicious local treats such as yakitori and takoyaki, contributing to the festive and welcoming atmosphere.
First held in 1935 to help lift the spirits of the city after the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934, the festival celebrates the opening of Hakodate Port. The parade continues on August 2 and 3, showcasing more Mikoshi and Dashi floats, creating a colorful and dynamic spectacle. The fireworks on the opening day are a grand affair, visible from several vantage points around the city. Adding to the charm of the celebration, the Flower Tram runs from July 25 to August 5, offering a unique and picturesque way to experience the festival.
