Hakodate Port Festival
Hakodate Port Festival (函館港まつり), held annually from August 1 to 5, is the highlight of the summer in Hakodate. The festival kicks off with a grand fireworks display, followed by a lively parade with Mikoshi (portable shrines) and beautifully decorated floats. One of the most exciting parts is the “Ika Odori” (Squid Dance), where participants, including visitors, join locals in a fun and easy-to-follow dance. The festival’s festive atmosphere is filled with music, colorful parades, and plenty of street stalls offering delicious treats like yakitori and takoyaki.
First held in 1935 to uplift the city after the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934, the festival commemorates the opening of Hakodate Port. The parade continues on August 2 and 3, featuring Mikoshi and Dashi floats. The fireworks display on the first day is a grand spectacle, visible from several spots around Hakodate. Don’t miss out on the special Flower Tram, adding extra charm to the celebration, running from July 25 to August 5.
