Tomonoura Travel Tips

5 of 5 in Hiroshima Prefecture

Tomonoura (鞆の浦) is a picturesque port town nestled at the southern tip of Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture, where the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea lap against the stone quays of a traditional fishing village. As part of the scenic Setonaikai National Park, Tomonoura is renowned for its well-preserved Edo-period streetscapes, white-walled storehouses, and its iconic stone lighthouse, which has guided sailors since the 19th century. The town exudes a timeless charm, inviting visitors to stroll its narrow lanes, admire moored fishing boats, and soak in the gentle rhythm of coastal life. With its harmonious blend of nature and tradition, Tomonoura offers a peaceful retreat from the modern world.

Historically, Tomonoura thrived as a strategic tidal port during the age of sail, when merchant vessels paused here to await favorable currents. This maritime role brought prosperity and cultural exchange, helping the town develop a rich local heritage. Today, echoes of that seafaring era remain in the town’s historic residences, temples, and small museums. One of Tomonoura’s signature specialties is homeishu, a traditional medicinal liquor brewed with 16 herbs and long believed to support health and vitality. Whether you're exploring its storied streets or sampling local traditions, Tomonoura offers a unique and enriching glimpse into the spirit of Setouchi’s coastal culture.
