Katsuno District

5.0 (1 review)

The Katsuno District (高島びれっじ) is a captivating, historic castle town that invites visitors to step back in time and explore its rich cultural legacy. As you wander its picturesque streets, you’ll encounter remarkable relics from its past, such as the imposing sōmon gates, elegant samurai residences, and the jin'ya, an old government outpost. These well-preserved landmarks provide a fascinating window into the area’s ancient history and offer a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese architecture and design.

A standout feature of the Katsuno District is the 150-year-old merchant house, carefully restored by local volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce. Now known as Takashima Village, it consists of eight halls and is a vibrant hub for visitors to experience the region’s authentic culture. Here, you can indulge in regional delicacies, participate in hands-on activities, and shop for unique souvenirs that capture the essence of the district. Though foreign language services are still in the process of being developed, Katsuno offers an unparalleled, genuine taste of traditional Japan that will enrich your travel experience.

I had a fantastic time exploring this wonderful spot! Each place offers something unique, starting with the Wax Town Candle Workshop, where I got to create my own candles—a fun and creative activity! There’s also Donki and Central Bakery, which are perfect for grabbing a quick bite or picking up some souvenirs. If you're into traditional crafts, don’t miss the Dye Workshop Ifu, where I learned about the art of dyeing.

For a more relaxed experience, I highly recommend stopping by Takashima Wani Cafe for a refreshing drink or Cafe Alivio for a peaceful break. If you’re after something more exciting, Zero Gravity is definitely worth checking out. There’s a bit of everything here, with something for everyone! It’s just a short 5-minute walk from Omi-Takashima Station, making it super convenient to visit. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!
