The Katsuno District (高島びれっじ) in Takashima City is a beautifully preserved former castle town that transports visitors to the Edo period with its quiet lanes and historic architecture. Once a bustling hub of local administration and trade, the area still showcases its legacy through samurai residences, impressive sōmon gates, and the original jin’ya—a fortified government outpost. The peaceful yet character-rich atmosphere invites travelers to explore at their own pace while imagining life in Japan’s feudal era.

At the heart of the district stands a restored 150-year-old merchant house, now transformed into Takashima Village—a cultural hub brought to life by local volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce. The building features eight themed halls offering regional dishes, traditional crafts, and hands-on experiences such as folk art workshops or Japanese cooking. While foreign language support is still limited, the warm hospitality and immersive setting offer a welcoming, off-the-beaten-path experience for travelers seeking a deeper connection to Japan’s rural heritage.

I had a fantastic time exploring this wonderful spot! Each place offers something unique, starting with the Wax Town Candle Workshop, where I got to create my own candles—a fun and creative activity! There’s also Donki and Central Bakery, which are perfect for grabbing a quick bite or picking up some souvenirs. If you're into traditional crafts, don’t miss the Dye Workshop Ifu, where I learned about the art of dyeing.

For a more relaxed experience, I highly recommend stopping by Takashima Wani Cafe for a refreshing drink or Cafe Alivio for a peaceful break. If you’re after something more exciting, Zero Gravity is definitely worth checking out. There’s a bit of everything here, with something for everyone! It’s just a short 5-minute walk from Omi-Takashima Station, making it super convenient to visit. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!
