Mount Misen

Recommended
2 of 6 in Miyajima Island

Mount Misen (弥山), the highest peak on Miyajima at 500 meters, offers breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and Hiroshima City. Revered for its spiritual significance, the mountain is closely associated with Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect, who is believed to have introduced Buddhism here. Near the summit, you'll find two sacred sites: the Misen Hondo (Main Hall) and Reikado (Hall of the Spiritual Flame). The Reikado enshrines a flame said to have burned since Kobo Daishi's time—this same flame was used to light the Flame of Peace in Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park.

Reaching the summit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours via one of three hiking trails: the steep but short Momijidani Course, the scenic Daisho-in Course, and the more forested Omoto Course. For an easier route, a ropeway from town takes you close to the top, though a moderate walk is still required. Along the trails, you may encounter local wildlife, including deer and, on rare occasions, wild monkeys—adding to Mount Misen’s natural beauty and appeal.
