The Museum is just a short walk from the exit of Itsukushima Shrine, or about a 15-minute walk from the Miyajima ferry pier.

Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore
The Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore (宮島歴史民俗資料館, Miyajima Rekishi Minzoku Shiryōkan) offers an in-depth look at the history and daily life of Miyajima. Visitors can explore both the island’s broader historical context and the everyday tools and traditions of its residents. The museum displays a wide range of artifacts—from sacred items related to the island’s shrine and ceremonies to common household objects—offering a well-rounded picture of life on Miyajima.
The museum building itself adds to the charm. Over 160 years old, it once served as the residence and storehouse of a wealthy merchant family that specialized in soy sauce production. The front section of the museum preserves the original living quarters, which overlook a peaceful traditional Japanese garden, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors.
