Fukusenji Temple

7 of 10 in Tono

Fukusenji Temple (福泉寺, Fukusenji) is a tranquil temple complex nestled on a forested hillside in the northeastern part of Tono. Affiliated with the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, the temple grounds feature several traditional wooden halls, peaceful walking paths, and a striking five-story pagoda that rises gracefully above the trees. Surrounded by mountain air and the sounds of nature, the setting invites quiet reflection and spiritual calm.

The temple’s most remarkable feature is its towering 17-meter-tall wooden statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Enshrined in the main hall, the statue radiates serenity and inspires a deep sense of reverence. Meticulously carved, it is one of the tallest indoor wooden Kannon statues in Japan. Blending sacred atmosphere, traditional architecture, and a scenic mountain setting, Fukusenji offers visitors a peaceful and enriching glimpse into Tono’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
