Hirosaki Castle

Recommended
1 of 10 in Hirosaki

Hirosaki Castle (弘前城), originally constructed in 1611 by the Tsugaru Clan, stands as one of the region's most significant historical landmarks. Situated within the expansive Hirosaki Park, the castle features a three-story keep, moats, gates, and corner turrets, offering a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. While the original five-story keep was struck by lightning and destroyed in 1627, it was rebuilt in 1810. What makes this castle unique in the Tohoku Region is that its keep has not been reconstructed in modern times, preserving its historical integrity. Renovation works are currently underway, with the keep temporarily relocated for preservation until 2025.

Hirosaki Park, which surrounds the castle, is renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms, drawing visitors from all over the world. With more than 2,500 cherry trees, the park features breathtaking cherry blossom tunnels and scenic boat rides along its moats. The annual cherry blossom festival, held from April 23 to May 5, is a major highlight, offering a vibrant celebration of the season. In addition to its floral beauty, the park is home to the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden and the Gokoku Shrine, adding further cultural depth to the area. With these attractions and the picturesque surroundings, Hirosaki Park is an essential destination for anyone visiting the city.
