Aomori Museum of Art
Aomori Museum of Art (青森県立美術館, Aomori Kenritsu Bijutsukan) is a striking modern art museum just outside Aomori City, designed to reflect the nearby Sannai Maruyama Jomon Archaeological Site. The museum’s unique architecture features display spaces dug into the earth, resembling archaeological trenches, while the building itself is painted white like stretched tents. This distinctive design creates an immersive art experience that blends art and history.
The museum’s permanent collection includes remarkable works such as three enormous Marc Chagall paintings, originally created as backdrops for a ballet. These stunning pieces are displayed in a room with towering 19-meter-high ceilings. Other notable works include woodblock prints by Munakata Shiko, vibrant pop art by Nara Yoshitomo, and a giant 8.5-meter tall Aomori-Ken dog statue, also by Nara, making it a must-visit for art lovers.
