Churaumi Aquarium

Highly Recommended
2 of 50 in Okinawa Island

The Churaumi Aquarium (美ら海水族館, Churaumi Suizokukan), located within the Ocean Expo Park, is one of Okinawa’s premier attractions. The park itself was the site of the 1975 International Ocean Expo, and the aquarium has since become a must-visit destination. After undergoing a complete redesign, it reopened in 2002 and has since become a global icon for marine life conservation. The aquarium’s centerpiece is the massive Kuroshio Tank, one of the largest in the world. This enormous tank is home to remarkable marine species, including the majestic whale sharks and graceful manta rays. Visitors can explore this underwater world from multiple viewing angles across three floors of exhibits, which include living coral ecosystems as well as various species of sharks, such as tiger and bull sharks.

In addition to the indoor exhibits, the aquarium offers a variety of outdoor attractions. Guests can enjoy live shows featuring dolphins, sea turtles, and manatees, with performances held throughout the day at no additional cost. The aquarium also hosts interactive experiences, such as feeding sessions, where visitors can participate in hands-on activities with the marine animals. For those looking to deepen their knowledge of the ocean, high-definition films on marine life are regularly screened. Whether you're exploring the awe-inspiring tanks or attending one of the many engaging shows, the Churaumi Aquarium provides a comprehensive and unforgettable experience, offering a deeper appreciation for Okinawa's rich and diverse marine environment.
