Satsuma Peninsula is best explored by rental car, as the area is quite rural and public transportation is limited. Renting a car is especially useful if you want to visit multiple attractions across the peninsula.
The peninsula is served by the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line, with three limited express trains per day from Kagoshima Chuo Station to Ibusuki, taking around 50 minutes. Local trains to Yamakawa Station run about once an hour, but other routes, such as to Makurazaki, are much less frequent, with trains every 2–4 hours. Many attractions are not accessible by train and require a bus or taxi from the nearest station.
