To reach Meiji Shrine, take the JR Yamanote Line and get off at Harajuku Station. The shrine is just a short walk from the station’s southern entrance. Alternatively, you can use the northern entrance, which is also within walking distance from Yoyogi Station.

Meiji Shrine
Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū), nestled in a vast evergreen forest near Harajuku Station, is one of Tokyo’s most revered and peaceful landmarks. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, the shrine honors the imperial couple who guided Japan through the transformative Meiji Restoration, marking the country’s emergence as a modern state. The shrine grounds, lovingly reconstructed after World War II, offer a tranquil escape from the surrounding city. A broad torii gate leads visitors into a serene woodland path lined with towering cypress trees, creating a sense of calm and spiritual reflection. Along the way, guests can participate in traditional Shinto rituals such as writing ema (wooden prayer plaques), offering coins at the main hall, or purifying themselves at the water basin.
In addition to the main shrine, the grounds include cultural and natural highlights. The Meiji Jingu Museum, designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, showcases personal belongings and artifacts related to the emperor and empress. Nearby, the beautifully landscaped Inner Garden, once accessible only to the imperial family, is especially popular in June, when over 150 varieties of irises bloom in vibrant color. Whether you’re drawn by its historical importance, spiritual atmosphere, or natural beauty, Meiji Shrine offers a deeply meaningful experience and remains a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the heart of Tokyo.

Meiji Shrine is a serene and beautiful escape from the bustling city. The peaceful walk through the lush, green forest leading to the shrine is refreshing and calming. The towering torii gates are impressive, and the atmosphere is genuinely spiritual. It felt like stepping into a tranquil oasis.
The shrine itself is stunning, with traditional Japanese architecture and a rich history. I loved watching the traditional Shinto rituals and even saw a wedding ceremony. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Japanese culture and find some peace in Tokyo!7 months ago — by Wesley
