From April to November, a bus runs every 2-3 hours from JR Nikko and Tobu Nikko stations to Kirifuri Waterfall. Take the Kirifuri Kogen bus and get off at the Kirifuri-no-taki stop. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to the observation deck. The ride takes about 10 minutes, costs 380 yen one way, and is covered by the Nikko All Area Pass. Buses do not stop near Nikko's temples and do not operate from December to March.
Kirifuri Waterfall (Kirifuri no taki)
Kirifuri Waterfall (霧降の滝, Kirifuri no taki) is a mesmerizing 75-meter, two-tiered cascade located in the Kirifuri Highlands, just a short distance from Nikko’s iconic temples and shrines. The waterfall lives up to its name, which means "falling mist," as the water plunges over the rocks below, creating a fine mist that envelops the area, enhancing its ethereal beauty. The surrounding landscape offers a dynamic backdrop throughout the year, with lush greenery in the warmer months and brilliant hues of red, orange, and gold in the fall. Whether you visit in the lush spring, vibrant summer, or crisp autumn, the waterfall remains a stunning destination, showcasing nature's ever-changing charm.
Although the former hiking trail to the base of the waterfall has been closed, visitors can still enjoy breathtaking views from a well-maintained observation deck across the valley. This viewing area is easily accessible with a short, 10-minute walk along a mostly paved path from the nearby parking lot and bus stop, where you'll also find convenient public facilities and restaurants. Autumn is particularly popular, especially from late October to early November, when the fall foliage reaches its peak, framing the waterfall in a spectacular display of color.
