Kanmangafuchi Abyss
Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) is a beautiful and tranquil gorge situated just outside central Nikko, created by a volcanic eruption from Mount Nantai. Though only a few hundred meters in length, the gorge offers a serene riverside walking trail that provides visitors with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The path winds through lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. As you walk along the trail, the peaceful sounds of the river and the breathtaking views of the gorge’s cliffs create a serene atmosphere that allows visitors to truly appreciate the natural beauty of Nikko.
One of the most iconic features of Kanmangafuchi Abyss is the row of 70 stone Jizo statues, which line the riverbank in a quiet and contemplative formation. These statues, known as "Bake Jizo" (Ghost Jizo), "Narabi Jizo" (Jizo in a line), and "Hyaku Jizo" (100 Jizo), have a mystical presence, and many believe they offer protection to travelers. Positioned facing the Nikko Botanical Garden, the statues are a sight to behold, though the garden itself cannot be accessed from the abyss. This unique and spiritual site offers both cultural and natural experiences, making it a must-see destination for those exploring the Nikko area.
