                                                        Nikko Botanical Garden
Nikko Botanical Garden (日光植物園, Nikko Shokubutsuen), managed by the University of Tokyo, is a tranquil sanctuary nestled in the heart of Nikko. Established in 1902 for the study of alpine plants, the garden now boasts a diverse collection of over 1,500 plant species and more than 2,200 individual plants. As visitors stroll along the well-maintained walking paths, they can explore a vast array of labeled trees, shrubs, and flowers, each adding to the serene atmosphere of the garden. The peaceful surroundings offer a perfect escape for nature enthusiasts, making it an ideal spot to unwind and immerse oneself in the beauty of nature.
The garden also offers stunning views of the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, although no direct trail connects the two sites. It is home to a variety of alpine and mountainous plants, as well as native tree species that thrive in the region’s climate. In addition to being a hub for botanical research, Nikko Botanical Garden is a place for visitors to enjoy the ever-changing seasons, from vibrant spring blossoms to the rich autumn foliage. The garden’s unique combination of scientific importance and natural beauty makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking both educational and leisurely experiences in the Nikko area.
