Hibara Shrine

17 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

Hibara Shrine (檜原神社, Hibara Jinja) is a deeply spiritual spot located on the Hibara Plateau in Nara. It is considered the original site where the sun goddess Amaterasu was first worshipped before being enshrined at Ise. The sacred mountain, Mt. Miwa, serves as the object of worship here, so the shrine has no main building or worship hall. Instead, visitors will find three symbolic torii gates aligned with the mountain.

Facing west, the plateau offers a breathtaking view of Nara and becomes especially magical during the spring and fall equinox. At these times, the setting sun aligns perfectly between the twin peaks of Mt. Nijouzan, creating a stunning sight that draws many visitors. The serene surroundings and spiritual history make Hibara Shrine a peaceful and unique destination for those exploring Japan’s ancient roots.
