From Tokyo to Hiroshima

  • By plane

  • From Tokyo, you can fly to Hiroshima in about 90 minutes. JAL and ANA fly from Haneda, and Spring Japan flies from Narita. Regular tickets with JAL or ANA cost around 41,000 yen, but discounts can lower that to 12,000–17,000 yen. Spring Japan starts at about 6,000 yen. Once you land, it takes 50 minutes and 1,450 yen by bus to reach Hiroshima city.

  • From Tokyo, you can take the Shinkansen to Hiroshima. The fastest Nozomi train takes about 4 hours. Hikari and Sakura trains take around 5 hours with a transfer at Shin-Osaka. A one-way ticket costs 18,380 yen for a non-reserved seat, about 19,000 yen for a reserved seat on Hikari or Sakura, and around 19,500 yen on Nozomi. The Japan Rail Pass covers Hikari and Sakura, but you’ll need to pay an extra 6,500 yen to use Nozomi.

  • From Tokyo, you can take an overnight bus to Hiroshima with companies like Willer Express. One-way tickets cost between 6,000 and 18,000 yen, depending on the day, company, and bus type. With a Japan Bus Pass, you can travel for as little as 3,000 yen.

From Osaka to Hiroshima

  • By plane

  • From Osaka, you can fly to Hiroshima, but it's not the most common way to travel between the two cities. Flights take about 1 hour, but when you add travel time to and from the airports, it’s usually slower than the Shinkansen. If you do fly, you'll depart from Itami or Kansai Airport and land at Hiroshima Airport, which is about 50 minutes by bus from the city center.

  • From Osaka, you can take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima. Nozomi and Mizuho trains take about 80 minutes, and Sakura trains take a bit longer. A one-way ticket costs 9,890 yen for a non-reserved seat, around 10,500 yen for a reserved seat on Sakura, and about 11,000 yen on Nozomi or Mizuho. Tourists can get a discount ticket for 7,900 yen. The Japan Rail Pass covers Sakura, but you’ll pay extra for Nozomi or Mizuho. The JR Kansai Hiroshima Pass and JR Sanyo Sanin Pass cover all trains.

From Fukuoka to Hiroshima

  • By train

  • From Fukuoka, you can take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima in about 1 hour. A one-way ticket costs around 9,000 yen, but tourists can get a discount fare for 6,300 yen. The JR Sanyo Sanin Pass and Hiroshima Yamaguchi Pass cover the trip. The Japan Rail Pass is valid on Sakura and Kodama trains, but you’ll need to pay extra for Nozomi and Mizuho.

  • From Fukuoka, you can take a highway bus to Hiroshima. Companies like Willer run several daytime buses and one night bus. The trip takes about 4.5 hours and costs between 2,500 and 4,250 yen, depending on the company and travel date.

From Kumamoto to Hiroshima

  • By train

  • From Kumamoto, you can take the Shinkansen to Hiroshima. The ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you take the Mizuho or Sakura trains on the Kyushu and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, the trip is fast and smooth. A one-way ticket costs around 10,000 to 12,000 yen. The Japan Rail Pass covers Sakura trains but not Mizuho—unless you have a regional pass like the JR Sanyo-Sanin or JR Kyushu Pass that allows it.

From Matsuyama to Hiroshima

  • By train

  • From Matsuyama, you can reach Hiroshima by train, but it’s a long way around and best for Japan Rail Pass users or those who get seasick. First, take the JR Shiokaze limited express to Okayama (about 2.5 hours), then transfer to the Shinkansen to Hiroshima (40 minutes). The full trip takes 3.5 to 4 hours and costs around 12,000 yen. It’s fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass if you use the Sakura train, but extra fees apply for Nozomi or Mizuho.

  • By ferry

  • From Matsuyama, the fastest way to get to Hiroshima is by boat. Setonaikai Kisen runs high-speed boats (70 minutes, 8,000 yen) and car ferries (2.5 hours, 5,000 yen) to Hiroshima Port. Taking a car costs about 11,000 yen one way. Both ports are about 30 minutes by bus or tram from the city centers.
